Conte hints at first Tottenham starts for Bentancur and Kulusevki

After arguably the worst result of Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur tenure on Wednesday, the team needs a big response this weekend.

At home to Southampton, Spurs led 2-1 in the final stages only for a couple of quickfire strikes from Saints to turn the game around. An eventual 3-2 loss represented a significant blow to the team’s top-four chances.

The tricky games keep coming for Tottenham too, as they welcome an impressive and defensively diligent Wolves outfit to north London on Sunday.

Here are you latest Spurs headlines ahead of that game, including fresh speculation over Harry Kane and Conte’s comments on a new signing.

Pochettino wants Kane reunion

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen to bring Harry Kane to Manchester United in the summer should he take up the job at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are set to appoint a new permanent boss at the end of the season, with Ralf Rangnick in temporary charge at the moment.

Pochettino is the favourite with many to take over and he helped turn Kane into one of the best strikers on the planet when they worked together at Spurs.

The England captain was subject to serious interest from Manchester City in the summer and despite being keen on the move, Tottenham resisted the efforts of the Premier League champions.

Conte’s Bentancur plan

Conte has hinted that he may start Rodrigo Bentancur on Sunday against Wolves.

While Spurs caved in late on against Saints, there were a number of impressive touches from the Uruguayan international and fans will be keen to see more of his talents from the off this weekend.

Conte was asked about the ex-Juventus man in his press conference and provided a view on what role Bentancur can thrive in.

“He can play….I think the best position for him is to play [as one of] two midfielders,” said Conte.

“He always played there but then with the national team and also sometimes with Juventus, he also played in a three in the midfield but in my mind the perfect suit for him is to play with the two midfielders.”

Owen backs Spurs for top four

Former England striker Michael Owen thinks Tottenham will edge out their rivals in the fight for a top-four berth.

Spurs are currently seventh in the table, but they have three games in hand on fourth-place West Ham, who they trail by four points.

Manchester United and Arsenal – sixth and fifth respectively – are also in the mix for the final Champions League spot, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea secure in the top three positions.

Despite their Southampton setback, Owen thinks Spurs have enough to take fourth.

“I’m going to go for Tottenham if they keep their big players fit,” he said. “[Harry] Kane is starting to get back to the Kane of old, if they can keep Son fit… [manager Antonio] Conte looks like he’s turning it around a little bit at Tottenham.”
