Former Manchester United star Paul Parker has told the club to sell captain Harry Maguire, with the solution also offered to manager Ralf Rangnick.
Maguire has been a regular in the United team since his £80million transfer from Leicester City in August 2019. The defender made over 50 appearances in each of his first two seasons at Old Trafford and may do that again this term.
He has featured 28 times so far, registering goals in the Premier League and Champions League.
Interim boss Rangnick, like predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has placed his trust in the England international. His ideal centre-back partnership is Maguire alongside Raphael Varane, although both players have dealt with injuries this campaign.
Maguire tends to come in for criticism due to his lack of pace, which means he struggles to deal with electric forwards such as Jamie Vardy and Mo Salah.
In addition, Maguire’s huge transfer fee is never far away. It tends to be the first calling point when the 28-year-old has a bad game. And the fact it is a world-record sum for a defender doesn’t help.
Parker thinks United should consider selling Maguire if a club comes in with a significant bid this summer. And he believes a fellow centre-half is ready to take the Englishman’s place.
Harry Maguire verdict given
“If United, in my opinion, were to get somewhere near to their money back on Harry Maguire, I think they’ll have to think about it,” he told the Daily Express.
“I think [Victor] Lindelof and Varane, you know, they could build something on there maybe, in a mode of what they’re looking for and where the club wants to be.
“You’re talking about players who are definitely more agile, a little bit quicker, better defenders in one against one situations and I think you have to look at it that way.
“I don’t know if it’s going to happen. Me, personally, for United to go forward, that’s the starting area.”
