Italiano: ‘Fiorentina need to send a signal’

Vincenzo Italiano feels Fiorentina need to beat Bologna to ‘send a signal to ourselves’ and again has words of warning for his ineffective trident attack.

It kicks off on Sunday at 11.30 GMT and the Viola are seeking their first win since February 20 against Atalanta after a run of two defeats and a draw.

“This was the first week in a long time where we were able to focus on preparing just for one game and with everyone at our disposal,” said the coach in his press conference.

“That includes Giacomo Bonaventura, as we had faith his ban would be reduced on appeal. We need to repeat our recent performances, but add some extra elements too.

“It feels a lot like the atmosphere before we played Bologna last time, when we needed a win to boost our confidence and send a sign to ourselves.

“Bologna are always a problematic opponent, they seem to bring something out of the bag when they are under pressure. They can score a goal in any way and Marko Arnautovic is a champion. We’ve got to show character.”

Italiano again had words of warning for his wide forwards in the 4-3-3 formation, as he continues to feel they are not contributing enough.

“We mustn’t call them wingers, but rather wide attackers. They have to think if there hasn’t been a goal, assist or shot on target, then this has been a negative performance for them. They need to be more present in the final third.

“If we manage to do that, we can still be ambitious in the final weeks of this season. I’m really impressed with the professional attitude of Krzysztof Piatek, he has the enthusiasm and desire to improve of a teenager, but can also find the goal with his eyes closed.”

The other January signing, Arthur Cabral, has struggled to make as much of an impact as Piatek.

“Cabral continues to have a few physical issues, but Piatek is making the most of his opportunities. Whoever deserves the jersey can then keep it.”
